This, as we know, simplifies both Europe and Latin America. Inherent in Santiago's theory of the in-between is a condensation of all things Latin American to become one where Western culture becomes one singular homogenized entity.
The 'in-between' space is a site of challenge to the dominant discourse, a contamination of what was thought to be above contamination. He major contribution of Latin America to Western culture is to be found in its systemic destruction of the concepts of unity and purity: these two concepts lose the precise contours of their meaning, they lose their crushing weight, their sign of cultural superiority, and do so to such an extent that the contaminating labor of Latin Americans affirms itself as it becomes more and more effective.
